The Panama City Rescue Mission is seeing more veterans among its growing population of needy than the state average.
David Kervin, who says others call him “Crazy Dave,” greets a long line of people lining up for lunch at the Panama City Rescue Mission Wednesday. The mission’s number of daily meals served has jumped from 350 to 550.

The number of homeless males locally who are military veterans is nearly twice the national average. A survey said that 34 percent of the local homeless are former military members, compared with the national average of 18 percent.

Unable to afford a haircut while currently homeless, Carolyn Dalston is trimmed by volunteer barber Kermit Whiteside of Inlet Beach in a hallway at the Panama City Rescue Mission on Wednesday. A survey of local homeless showed the percentage of homeless single women with children doubled from 33 percent in 2007 to 67 percent this year.
