A controlled burn quickly got out of control as a thunderstorm's winds spread the smoke across western Panama City and much of Panama City Beach Thursday.
Westbound U.S. 98 motorists on the Hathaway Bridge in Panama City drive toward a smoke plume that covered much of Pa-nama City Beach about 4 p.m. Thursday. Winds from an approaching thunderstorm shifted and made a controlled burn into a wildfire that consumed about 1,000 acres of uninhabited forest north of U.S. 98 and west of Thomas Drive. No structures were damaged or injuries reported. (TERRY BARNER | The News Herald)
